Noggins are a common example of where you may need to toe nail timber together too. In an ideal world you would always be able to nail straight through the back of one piece of timber into another for a good strong fixing - like in the picture below. It will stay true for a long time. It isn't always possible to nail timber together like this though.
Perhaps the timber you are fixing to is a joist or stud that is hard up against a wall and so you cannot get behind it. A wall or floor plate that you cannot get above or below. Alternatively it could be too thick for you to nail through the back of because you can't find a nail long enough.

The number of nails will depend on the size of timber being fixed and its application. For stud-work interior wall framing using 75x50 or x50mm timbers I would use 75mm - mm round wire nails. Tooth plate connectors are made from cold rolled band steel or hot dipped galvanised mild steel. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, with diameters ranging from 38 to mm.
Larger connectors are available for use in glued-laminated members. They are mostly circular, but square and oval shapes are also available. The joints are normally held together by bolts installed with round or square washers of a size about half the diameter of the connectors used.
Timber Connectors and Metal Plate Fasteners
They come with one-sided and double-sided toothing. The tooth plate connectors are used in laterally loaded timber-to-timber and steel-to-timber joints.
They are pressed into the timber members to be connected. Double-sided tooth plate connectors are used in timber-to-timber joints; alternatively, pairs of single-sided connectors may be used back-to-back, if the joints should be demountable.
Single-sided connectors are also used in steel-to-timber joints. First, the bolt hole is drilled in the wood, then the connectors are placed between the timber members and the connection is pressed together.
A hydraulic press or a high strength bolt is used as pressing the connector teeth into the timber requires considerable force and either. Only for small connector diameters up to 65 mm, mild steel bolt can be used. If bolts are used to press the connector teeth into the wood, large washers are required, otherwise the chance of crushing of the wood is higher.
After pressing, the high strength bolt is replaced by the permanent mild steel bolt using washers. Coach screws may also be used in connection with tooth plates, as an alternative to bolts. In single-sided tooth plate connections, the load is transferred by shear in the bolt. In single-sided connections, the hole diameter in the tooth plate corresponds to the bolt diameter plus a small tolerance.
